Protenus President to Present at NCHICA 24th Annual Conference
Protenus President, Robert Lord, to present how user behavior analytics provide powerful tools in identifying true threats to patient data
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert Lord, President and Co-Founder of Protenus, a healthcare compliance analytics platform that protects patient privacy at our nation's leading health systems, will present with David Holtzman, the Vice President of Compliance Strategies for Cynergistek, on the use of user entity and behavior analytics (UEBA) to identify anomalous and potentially risky behaviors within healthcare information systems. The use of clinical context and behavior analytics is an emerging field in privacy monitoring, with some platforms able to analyze 100 percent of all accesses in the EHR to accurately detect threats to PHI.
Lord and Holtzman's joint presentation, entitled "Behavioral Analytics Role in Assuring Data Security," will explore advances in UEBA that allow for healthcare privacy officers to gain full visibility into how users are accessing patient data, allowing healthcare organizations to better protect patient privacy.
"UEBA is a broad category of technologies that have been in existence for years, but advances in this field are being applied to healthcare to give health systems greater visibility into how their employees are using the EHR and associated information systems," stated Lord. "When healthcare organizations gain a better understanding of how their patient data is being accessed and used, appropriate steps can be taken to better protect this data from unfortunate misuse. The reality, however, is that UEBA exists on a spectrum, and there are many considerations that are unique to healthcare when discussing the types of platforms you might want to use to monitor user behavior."
Currently, health systems predominantly use tools that reactively respond to suspected patient privacy violations, run routine reports, and facilitate manual audits. Similarly, the UEBA market is often focused on broad tools, applicable to many markets, that don't focus uniquely on healthcare challenges. With at least 41 percent of all data breaches attributable to healthcare organization insiders, according to the Protenus Breach Barometer, this presentation will detail how organizations can reduce the risk that insiders pose to patient data by auditing every access and proactively identifying breaches to patient privacy.
NCHICA was created to improve the delivery, quality, accessibility, and efficiency of healthcare through the use of information technology. This community provides a neutral and engaging environment where members can gather to discuss common concerns in healthcare privacy and security.
