Protection of sensitive data must go beyond PCI compliance warns Ground Labs
SEATTLE, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Ground Labs, a leader in sensitive data discovery software, has issued a warning to businesses globally on the importance of understanding their sensitive data handling practices. After publishing guidance concerning the recent Bash bug dubbed "Shellshock", Ground Labs expects large scale threats to continue evolving which enable hackers to easily steal any type of personal sensitive data.
"Hackers are stealing data which can be easily monetized on the black market," said Stephen Cavey, Director of Corporate Development. "We expect a continuing trend of cyber attacks to remain largely focussed on stealing sensitive customer data which is used to commit identity theft leading to multiple forms of financial crime. Ultimately the losers are consumers who fall victim to these crimes as a result of businesses who are careless in the way data is stored and handled."
Ground Labs has advocated getting back to basics in understanding how a business stores, transmits or processes sensitive data. In recent years particular focus has been placed upon cardholder data as a result of PCI compliance however it is becoming increasingly important for businesses to apply these stringent data security standards across all types of sensitive personal information.
In direct response to this threat Ground Labs published the Data Recon security tool which enables 95 types of sensitive personal data to be secured including US social security numbers, Medicare information for HIPAA and personal information for US data privacy laws.
As part of its commitment to empower businesses with an ability to validate possible risk without any financial investment, Ground Labs also offers a free trial for all new customers. The free software can be activated by visiting www.groundlabs.com/software/data-recon/sensitive-data-discovery
