Protect Your Family's Water Supply with Regular Well System Maintenance
Hudson Valley-based T.Webber Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electric offers advice on keeping your well water system clean and healthy
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., March 15, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- T.Webber Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electric, a BBB A+ accredited business and recipient of more than 1,000 5-star consumer reviews, recommends that homeowners in the Hudson Valley have their well system inspected in March to guard against bacteria and other contaminants that pose severe threats to health and safety.
Many homes in the Hudson Valley are on well water. Unlike municipal water and sewer systems, well water isn't regulated by local or federal agencies. That means it's up to individual homeowners to proactively monitor their systems.
"If your well system and water are monitored and maintained, there's no problem," said Tommy Webber, owner of T.Webber Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electric. "With regular inspections, most pollutants and equipment failures can be detected before they become major issues. Many people only inspect their well system or test their water when they're either buying a property or selling it, and a lot of things can go wrong in between. The results can be inconvenient, expensive and even dangerous."
Webber recommends homeowners identify the location of their well, if they don't know where it is.
"It pays to know your well system," Webber said. "A quick visual inspection can alert you if something is wrong between regularly schedule maintenance."
One of the most common risks for well water systems is bacteria. Regular inspections and water testing are the best defense against bacterial contamination, but annual tests aren't foolproof since water tables can change. In addition to annual testing, homeowners should also have their systems tested in the following circumstances:
- Test drinking water immediately if you have no recent test results or any record of previous tests.
- Test if you notice any change in the taste, color or odor of your water.
- Test after any flooding in or near the well to determine if flood water carries bacteria or other contaminants into the well system.
- Test more than once a year in special situations:
- If someone in the household is pregnant or nursing.
- If there are unexplained illnesses in the family.
- If your neighbors find a dangerous contaminant in their water.
- If there is a spill of chemicals or fuels into or near your well.
If an inspection detects bacteria, a shock chlorination treatment is recommended. A chlorine solution circulated throughout the system will kill most bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella, staphylococcus and rotavirus.
For more permanent solutions, ensuring your well caps are water tight and well casings meet code requirements is recommended, as well as Ultra Violet Light installations that continuously fight and sterilize bacteria. Water filtration systems can also be installed to combat other contaminants.
"Your family depends on clean water for everything from drinking and brushing their teeth to flushing the toilet and doing laundry," Webber said. "A contamination can mean a serious disruption or a significant health risk. The sooner you address it, the better. And taking steps to protect your system and your family from contamination in the first place is even more effective."
