Prominent Attorney Willie Gary Files Billion Dollar Lawsuit Against NFL for Concealing the True Consequences of Head Traumas
Retired NFL Players Seek Justice
TAMPA, Fla., June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Prominent Attorney Willie E. Gary and his legal team have filed suit against the NFL for failure to take effective action to protect NFL players, and failure to inform players of the true risks associated with brain injuries and other significant injuries. The legal team includes Willie E. Gary (Stuart, FL), Charles Emanuel (Orlando, FL), Wayne Ferrell (Jackson, MS), and Charles Peckham (Houston, TX).
Since the suicide of Dave Duerson, a former NFL Chicago Bear who took his own life by shooting himself in the chest, a spotlight has been placed on highlighting the true detrimental effects of concussions and the NFL's presumed concealment of this information. This recent complaint against the NFL includes former players for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The lawsuit, which has been filed in Tampa, Florida, holds the NFL responsible for deliberately ignoring and concealing known effects of repeated concussions. Attorneys for the plaintiffs allege the NFL deceived players and caused the players to believe concussions or head injuries did not present serious life altering risks. According to a statement issued by lead attorney Willie Gary, NFL players were led to believe it was safe to return to practice, and play without limitations or restrictions and without release from a medical physician.
"This is a very sad and unfortunate situation," said Gary. "There are so many who have suffered, and many who have died because someone thought that the almighty dollar was more important than human life." Gary and his legal team contend that their clients intend to force the NFL to acknowledge their wrongful actions and bring change to the current NFL rules and responsibilities.
"When there is no accountability for harm caused, then those at fault will undoubtedly continue to act in whatever ways bring the most profits, with more and more human beings being hurt in the process," said Gary.
Gary is no stranger to seeking justice. Gary and his legal team are known for taking on some of the nation's most powerful corporate giants. In 1995, a jury awarded Gary and his legal team a record-breaking, half-billion dollars against one of the world's largest funeral chains, The Loewen Group. In addition, Gary is noted for winning a $240 million jury verdict in Orange County against the Walt Disney Corporation for his clients who alleged that Disney stole their idea for a sports theme park. In 2001, a jury awarded Gary a $139.6 million verdict for the Maris Distributing Company against Anheuser Busch.
A former safety for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings, Charles Emanuel joined the Gary Law Firm in 2003. Emanuel has flexed his legal muscle by handling cases against Channel 9 in Orlando, FL, the Orange County School Board and the Orlando Sentinel.
Wayne E. Ferrell, Jr. has handled prominent cases in Jackson and around the world. He was the attorney of record representing parties with claims against ValuJet as a result of the 1996 Florida Everglades Crash, and he represented parties suing American Airlines as a result of the Bar Harbor crash in New York. He also represented families harmed as a result of the Delta Flight 191 crash in Dallas, Texas as well as chartered Arrow Flight 1285 that crashed in Gander, Newfoundland, killing 256 passengers and crew including members of the 101st Airborne traveling from Cairo, Egypt home to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Ferrell specializes in Sports Law and Aviation Law.
No stranger to high profile cases, Charles H. Peckham currently represents famed radio personality George Willborn and his family in Chicago, Illinois along with Mr. Gary. Peckham also represents Dr. Conrad Murray, the doctor accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson. Peckham is widely known for his experience handling cases involving racism. Charles H. Peckham concentrates in specific areas of litigation including Employment and Aviation law.
