ProgenyHealth's Retrospective Study on Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Published in Population Health Management
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., April 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ProgenyHealth, the market leader in evidence-based care management solutions for premature and medically complex newborns, announced today that a retrospective observational study on neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), has been published in the journal, Population Health Management. The paper was authored by clinical members of ProgenyHealth's Executive Leadership team, Drs. Jerry Lee, Sonia Hulman, Michael Musci, and Ellen Stang.
Lead author, Dr. Jerry Lee states, "According to a recent study, the number of women using opioids during pregnancy has increased 450% in the past decade. As a result, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of babies born with drug withdrawal. ProgenyHealth partners with NICUs that provide excellent, effective and safe care for these infants. However, we did notice variation in treatment practices, which led us to study our experience."
The paper titled, "Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: Influence of a Combined Inpatient/Outpatient Methadone Treatment Regimen on the Average Length of Stay of a Medicaid NICU Population," is a retrospective data analysis examining a population of infants from a large Medicaid health plan, born with NAS and managed by ProgenyHealth. The primary objective of the study is to assess the average length of stay in the NICU and to determine the variables that may account for differences in inter-institutional lengths of stay.
