Tax and Estate Planning Tips for 2019 and Beyond
Cal Brown
Financial Advisor
Savant Capital Management
Washington, D.C.
With the new tax law in mind, Cal Brown has five tips for tax and estate planning: "This is the first tax filing season under the tax law passed in 2018. A lot has changed. What can you do? 1. Pay off Home Equity Lines of Credit; 2. Combine or 'bunch' charitable contributions; 3. Maximize Retirement Plan and Health Savings Account contributions; 4. Maximize 529 Plan contributions; and 5. Retirees should optimize withdrawals from taxable and pre-tax accounts in order to manage AGI."
Brown is the author of "When Life Strikes: Weathering Financial Storms", giving general guidance and specific financial tips to cope with unexpected tragedies, learning how to prepare for them, and looking ahead for the sake of your spouse, children, and personal future. He is also an adjunct professor in the master of science in taxation (MST) program at American University. Brown is a member and past chairman of the Financial Planning Association-National Capital Area (FPA-NCA), and was named one of the top financial planners in the greater Washington, D.C. metro area by Washingtonian and Northern Virginia magazines.

Shutdown Wake-Up Call: 4 Tips to Boost Savings
Pamela Yellen
President
Bank On Yourself
"After missing just one or two paychecks, we heard so many heart-breaking stories from government workers who weren't being paid or were furloughed. The key is to get started building your emergency fund today -- before you need it. 1) Audit your credit card and checking account statements for the last three months to weed out charges for services you rarely use or don't need. 2) Get clear on the difference between 'wants' and 'needs' and put the brakes on impulse buying. One way to do this: wait at least 24 hours before buying anything that is not a necessity, and at least seven days before making any large purchase. Another is to try paying with cash for one month (studies show you'll spend 20 percent less on average). 3) Take a hard look at your daily habits. Grabbing lunch at fast-food or other restaurant adds up. So does buying that $5 (plus tip) Starbucks coffee every day. Have trouble letting go of such expenses? Consider the reasons you need a healthy rainy day fund. If you don't have a sizeable emergency fund, you can't afford it. 4) Beware of 'Parkinson's Law,' which warns that 'expenses rise to equal income,' to avoid spending all the money you'll be saving."
Yellen is a financial investigator and the author of two New York Times best-selling books, including her latest, "The Bank on Yourself Revolution: Fire Your Banker, Bypass Wall Street, and Take Control of Your Own Financial Future." She investigated more than 450 financial strategies seeking an alternative to the risk and volatility of stocks and other investments, which led her to a time-tested, predictable method of growing wealth now used by more than 500,000 Americans.

Will Your Business Survive the Next Recession?
Allison Maslan
CEO, Founder
Pinnacle Global Network
"We are stepping into an interesting time -- an interesting time politically and an interesting time economically. We've really got to be honest with ourselves about what is approaching. We don't know if it's next year, we don't know if it's the year after, but based on what history tells us, we've got a recession looming. So, what does that mean? Does it mean business owners should freak out? No. It means get prepared. Have your eyes open. Actually, a down economy is a time when savvy, creative business owners make their big money. That's where the big growth happens. But you've got to be prepared. You need to do things strategically. Then, there are so many benefits. Lots of Fortune 100 companies had their biggest growth in a down economy."
Maslan is the CEO and founder of Pinnacle Global Network, offering business mentorship and mastermind programs to established business owners who want to accelerate their growth, capitalize on their success, and balance it all with a meaningful life. She is also the author of two books: Amazon #1 bestseller "Blast Off!: The Surefire Success Plan to Launch Your Dreams into Reality" and her newest book "Scale or Fail: How to Build Your Dream Team, Explode Your Growth, and Let Your Business Soar" (October 2018, Wiley), which hit #1 on Amazon even before its release. For further high-impact support, watch Maslan's free video series for business owners, "The Scale Blueprint" for Established Companies That Want to Multiply Their Growth.

Experts, Here's What the Media Really Wants
Drew Gerber
CEO
Wasabi Publicity, Inc.
"Journalists aren't really looking for household names. They're looking for the people, the individuals who can really bring something unique, something fresh to their audience -- something that makes a difference. If you are that person, you need to get out there and share that message. But first, you need to get clarity on what the value is that you actually bring. What makes you unique? What makes you different? That's what needs to be pitched to the media."
Gerber is on a mission to change global conversations and challenge industry conventions. He lives to spark "aha" moments, helping people discover new ways of thinking to create positive change. He and his business partner Michelle Tennant Nicholson founded Wasabi Publicity to highlight businesses, entrepreneurs, and organizations working for good in the world. An early adopter of the freedom and opportunity afforded by the global web economy, Gerber runs the company from his homes in Budapest, Hungary, and the Serbian village of Stara Moravica, where he started an IT training center and employs local people as part of Wasabi's international team. Recognized by PR Week and Good Morning America for its innovative business practices and growth, Wasabi Publicity helps clients expand their impact through top media placements such as Dr. Phil, Oprah, Anderson Cooper, The Wall Street Journal, Inc., Forbes, Entrepreneur, and other top media. A serial entrepreneur, Gerber created Online PressKit 24/7, one of the first platforms to allow individuals, companies, and organizations to put all their media materials online for journalists to access anytime, anywhere. With three decades of PR, entrepreneurial, and human development experience, Gerber is a thought leader on the changing media landscape, and a go-to person for those seeking to expand their impact. He is the author of "Destination Aha! Becoming Unstuck in Life and Business," and a member of Forbes Agency Council, an invitation-only organization for senior-level executives in successful public relations, media strategy, creative, and advertising agencies.
