EXPERT ALERTS:
Islamophobia on the Rise
Erik Love
Assistant Professor of Sociology
Dickinson College
May 2 marks the four-year anniversary of the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden. Islamophobia continues to rise, and bin Laden remains a political boogeyman. Says Love: "Islamophobia and fear of terrorism have remained a prominent part of American political and social discourse in the four years since Osama bin Laden was killed. For example, current leading Republican presidential candidates have made statements in support of policies that discriminate against Muslim Americans."
Love is the author of the forthcoming book, "Islamophobia and Civil Rights: Race and Advocacy in the United States" (New York University Press), and a 2009 journal article, "Confronting Islamophobia in the United States: Framing Civil Rights Activism Among Middle Eastern Americans," and has contributed chapters to numerous books. His area of expertise include Islamophobia, civil-rights advocacy for Muslims and Muslim Americans, and racial discrimination and profiling.

The Clinton Foundation and Future of Charities
Leslie Lenkowsky
Professor of Practice in Public Affairs and Philanthropy
Indiana University School of Public & Environmental Affairs
In light of the recent Clinton Foundation allegations, Lenkowsky says: "I am less concerned about the effects of all this on Hillary's presidential campaign and more about how they create a misleading and, maybe, disreputable image of charities. This has been a problem with the Clinton Foundation – and celebrity philanthropy more generally – all along. Also, in my opinion, while there's a great deal of smoke around the foundation now, it is not clear there's a smoking gun. Some media might have suggested a quid pro quo, but some of the stories do not include proven allegations, and alternative explanations sound implausible. In addition, the fact that the Clintons pocketed speaking fees and sponsors and contributed to the foundation is not the issue here; that's not uncommon in the nonprofit world."

Supreme Court to Rule on Same-Sex Marriage
Steve Sanders
Associate Professor of Law
Indiana University Maurer School of Law
"The idea that the Supreme Court doesn't have any authority with the question of marriage is, frankly, idiotic. I expect the Supreme Court will rule against gay marriage bans, with it likely being a 5-4 decision in favor of marriage equality, with Justice Kennedy writing the majority opinion."
Sanders is co-author on "The People's Brief" in support of marriage equality – the amicus brief submitted by the Human Rights Campaign in March – and is considered a leading scholar on the animus question, which he addressed on SCOTUSBlog earlier this year. In addition to the People's Brief, Sanders authored a widely referenced amicus brief for 23 law and history professors in Varnum v. Brien, in which the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously struck down the state's statutory ban on same-sex marriage. He filed an amicus brief in the Missouri Supreme Court on behalf of 19 law professors in a case that asks Missouri to provide committed domestic partners with the same survivor benefits that the state provides to heterosexual spouses of state troopers who are killed in the line of duty. Sanders also represented 24 law professors as amici in National Pride at Work v. Granholm, a case in the Michigan Supreme Court on whether public-employer domestic partner benefit programs violate the state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

The U.S. Math Crisis Standardized Testing and Common Core
Elie Venezky
Co-founder
Prestige Prep, +1Math
"In Nicholas Kristof's recent New York Times op-ed (http://tinyurl.com/l3h4eb8), he gives statistics about how bad American students are at math, and it's depressing. With STEM jobs on the rise, math literacy today affects tomorrow's personal livelihoods and the future of our economy. According to the Nation's Report Card (http://tinyurl.com/mn6snpf), only 26% of high school students graduate at or above grade-level math. The good news is that it doesn't have to be this way. The problems American students have with math are fixable. The main issue is the way math is taught in school and what teachers must focus on as dictated by year-end tests. Teachers must move at a quick pace from subject to subject, and there is little time left for application or problem recognition. Students in this country can learn math; we just need to change our strategies and increase our expectations."
Venezky is the author of "Test Prep Sanity for Students: What to Do, How to Think and Who to Ignore to Stay Sane and Score on Standardized Tests" (http://budurl.com/TPSSBook), "Test Prep Sanity: How to Help Your Child Excel on Standardized Tests Without Driving Each Other Crazy" (http://budurl.com/TPSPBook), and co-author of "Hack Your Brain" (http://budurl.com/hackurbrain).
