Pristine Agency Reviews Real ID Identification: A Must For Domestic Flights Starting in 2018
Threats to the safety of airline passengers since 9/11 have led to a number of changes regarding security. These changes continue still today including the implementation of the REAL ID Act. What does this mean for airline passengers?
HENDERSON, Nev., May 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- As a means to set certain standards for identification, the 9/11 Commission implemented the REAL ID Act. Anyone flying domestically will be required to have either a passport or a Real ID-Compliant Driver's License starting January 22, 2018. The commission is encouraging states to comply with stricter standards before issuing driver's licenses'.
The REAL ID Act requires applicants provide proof of legal residence and date of birth to get a secure driver's license. Some states, like Illinois, do not require a birth certificate when applying for a driver's license. According to the new standards, that conflicts with the Federal REAL ID Act of 2005.
The new standards will be rolled out on a timetable to educate the public and give the states time to comply with the changes. In July 2016 the TSA will begin educating the public through web-based advisories and coordinating with airport personnel. In December 2016 the TSA will use handouts, signage and other forms of communication at airport checkpoints to make people aware of the coming changes.
Starting January 22, 2018, the new standard will go into effect and airline passengers must show a REAL ID unless they have been granted an extension. They will still need to show a TSA approved form of identification, such as a passport or passport card, global entry card, U.S. military ID, airline or airport-issued ID, federally recognized tribal-issued photo ID. By October 1, 2020 all travelers must have the required REAL ID identification in order to board a domestic flight.
Airline travelers should have plenty of time to comply with the requirements and should check with their state to confirm their REAL ID status, find out how they can acquire a new compliant ID and find out what other forms of identification are acceptable for domestic travel.
