Press Conference: New Data Released on Women-owned Businesses
A new Survey of Business Owners provides groundbreaking new data on the growth in numbers of women-owned enterprises
WASHINGTON, Aug. 14, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Women's Business Council (NWBC) will host a press conference via telephone on August 19th, at 11am ET with Presidentially-appointed Council Chair Carla Harris, Assistant to the President Tina Tchen and senior staff from the United States Census to discuss preliminary data from the 2012 Survey of Business Owners (SBO). The data is expected to show growth in numbers of women-owned companies, especially for women of color, across the country. The preliminary data is slated to be officially released by the United States Census Bureau on August 18th, 2015.
"We are so excited to see these numbers from the Survey of Business Owners – as this data will tell an even more comprehensive story about the growth of women's entrepreneurship. In order for the Council and other stakeholders to produce the most impactful recommendations and provide resources – we must know the full story," said Carla Harris, Presidentially-appointed Chair of the NWBC.
The SBO is released every five years and is the most accurate and comprehensive measure of the state of women-owned businesses. The last release, in 2007, found that there are 7.8 million women-owned businesses in the United States reflecting a 20.1% increase from 2002 to 2007. Women-owned firms made up 28.7% of all nonfarm businesses across the country and generated $1.2 trillion in total receipts. And 11.7% of the firms had paid employees, employing a total of 7.6 million people across the country with a payroll of $217.6 billion.
"We expect that the SBO data will confirm a high and increasing growth rate of numbers of women-owned businesses and their corresponding impact on the economy. With the numbers we are reviewing, we are looking at 10 million women-owned businesses by 2017. Our market interaction with entrepreneurs tells us that women entrepreneurs continued to originate business throughout the financial crisis in a robust way," said Harris.
Please join us to learn more about this important data on August 19th at 11am ET. The dial-in number: 1-888-621-9649 and Event ID: 421053. The briefing will include highlights from the data, new trends on women's entrepreneurship and more. Time will be reserved for questions.
