President's Climate Change Task Force Recommends Stronger Federal-Local Partnerships

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- President Obama's State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience this week released 35 recommendations for how the federal government can best support local communities in the face of extreme weather and climate impacts. The Task Force, which includes a number of city officials including Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, First Vice President at the National League of Cities (NLC), presented the largest and most comprehensive look at federal preparedness efforts and ways to improve federal-local partnerships.

"Today's recommendations by the Climate Change Task Force map a clear path forward to modernize federal programs to support climate resilience efforts," said Clarence Anthony, CEO and executive director of the National League of Cities. "Crucially, the recommendations do not simply ask for more money—they ask for cooperation and the flexibility to meet climate challenges in creative new ways. NLC is a coalition partner of the Resilient Communities for America (RC4A), which presented a "Federal Policy Initiative" to the Task Force with input from almost 100 local governments. Other RC4A partners include ICLEI USA, US Green Building Council and the World Wildlife Fund.
