President Obama Announces Intent to Nominate Cono Namorato for Assistant Attorney General
WASHINGTON, Feb. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- President Obama today announced his intent to nominate Cono R. Namorato, a longtime Member of Caplin & Drysdale, as the next Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Department of Justice Tax Division.
Mr. Namorato is one of the most experienced tax practitioners in the United States, with a distinguished career in government service as well as in private practice. He started his career as an Internal Revenue Service Special Agent in Brooklyn, New York, conducting criminal tax investigations. After attending law school, he joined the Tax Division's Criminal Section, rising to become the Deputy Assistant Attorney General in charge of criminal tax prosecutions nationwide. Mr. Namorato then joined Caplin & Drysdale, where he has practiced almost entirely in the field of criminal tax litigation for over 30 years, handling numerous high-profile, complex matters involving clients from around the world. He interrupted his work at the Firm to become the IRS's Director of the Office of Professional Responsibility from 2004-2006, where he supervised the IRS office regulating tax practitioner ethics. Mr. Namorato has been a frequent speaker on criminal tax issues, and was active in the American Bar Association's Section of Taxation, chairing two committees that reviewed and reported on criminal tax enforcement policy in the U.S.
"With Cono's extensive credentials and remarkable career experience in the field of tax litigation, upon his expected confirmation, the Tax Division will have a leader who knows as much about tax enforcement as anyone in the U.S.," said Beth Shapiro Kaufman, President of Caplin & Drysdale. "We will be sorry to lose our colleague of so many years, but we salute his remarkable dedication to public service, which reflects the deeply held values of our Firm."
