President Leonel Fernandez Joins Efforts on Technology and Media for Development to Achieve The Millennium Development Goals
NEW YORK, May 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- South-South News was honored with a visit from President Leonel Fernandez Reyna of the Dominican Republic this past weekend. His Excellency arrived at the network's Global Headquarters in New York where he was greeted by South-South News Honorary President, Ambassador Francis Lorenzo, UN member states from Tajikistan, Moldova, El Salvador, Peru, Tunisia, Kenya, Bangladesh, among members from other United Nations agencies, civil society and private sector. During his two hour visit he toured the high-definition digital operations, facilitated an on-camera interview and held a meeting with South-South News Executive Management and UN Member states.

At the meeting, President Leonel Fernandez expressed his government's support on the initiative of the South-South News digital platform as a tool for development for the developing countries working towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The President also described his nation's efforts to bridge the digital divide by shifting technology from analog to digital within five years. "Through different initiatives in healthcare, education, e-government, e-learning – you put all of this together and I then think that there will be a digital culture in the Dominican Republic," he said. The transition from analog to digital in the Dominican Republic could serve as a catalyst for further economic development in the Caribbean nation. The visit culminated with an award presentation, recognizing President Leonel Fernandez for his leadership in promoting Model UN. Under his leadership as President of the Dominican Republic, that country became the first in the world to universally integrate Model UN into its high school curriculum. The award was presented by two young students from New Jersey who recently participated in the Montessori Model UN at the United Nations New York City.
