President Banda Drives Forward Millennium Development Goals for Africa
LUSAKA, Zambia, September 7, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- His Excellency Mr. Rupiah Banda has completed a visit to Rwanda in his capacity as chairperson of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).
President Banda travelled to Rwanda to attend a one-day Heads of State and Government summit, where he led discussions about implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for African countries. These are aimed at tackling global challenges in the areas of development, governance, peace, security and human rights.
Speaking after the successful meeting His Excellency said: "It was important for the entire region that we took this opportunity to share the individual experiences of our various countries in advance of the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York later this month, where action to achieve MDGs will take centre stage.
"I believe that between us we African nations have the knowledge, skills, experience and resources to achieve our MDGs. Cooperation among the African nations to achieve their MDG goals is an excellent example of the global cooperation principle enshrined in the UN's Millennium Declaration."
Zambia's own actions to support the realization of MDGs, as a signatory to the UN Millennium Declaration, include the Poverty Reduction and Strategy Paper, the Transitional National Development Plan, the Vision 2030 and the Fifth National Development Plan. These are all aimed at accelerating the attainment of MDG targets by 2015.
After the summit President Banda joined other African Heads of State and Government at the inauguration ceremony of President Kagame, recently reelected President of the Republic of Rwanda.
His Excellency was accompanied to Rwanda by first Republican president Kenneth Kaunda.
