Presentations at NPUAP Annual Conference Showcase Effectiveness of Leaf Patient Monitoring System in Pressure Injury Prevention
Several presentations demonstrate the Leaf System's value in the fight against pressure injuries
PLEASANTON, Calif., Feb. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Three presentations at the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) Annual Conference will highlight how Leaf Healthcare's innovative Patient Monitoring System significantly reduces a patient's risk of developing a pressure injury.
The Leaf system is the first FDA-cleared medical technology that continuously monitors the activity and position of patients in order to help identify patients that could benefit from repositioning. Studies have shown that patients protected by Leaf are much less likely to develop pressure injuries. The three NPUAP presentations will be:
- "Effect of a wearable patient sensor on care delivery for preventing pressure injuries in acutely ill adults: A pragmatic randomized clinical trial (LS-HAPI study)," a presentation by David Pickham, PhD, RN, Executive Director of Transdisciplinary Research at Stanford Health Care, which is being honored with the conference's "Best Abstract" award. The study found that patients randomized to be treated by Leaf were 73% less likely to develop a pressure injury.
- "Impact of Position Optimization on Probability of Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPI): A Multi-Center Analysis," a poster presentation by Dr. Barrett Larson, CEO and co-founder of Leaf Healthcare. His presentation will discuss the Integrated Positioning Index™, a new, accurate way to assess and manage pressure injury prevention efforts. The index, which uses data collected by the Leaf system, is the first tool that measures not just how often a patient is turned, but also the magnitude of each turn and monitors time off of compressed tissue to allow for adequate reperfusion.
- "Turning and Repositioning: Science and Implementation," a discussion of current practices and emerging research by Tracey Yap, PhD, RN, CNE, WCC, FAAN, an associate professor at the Duke University School of Nursing. This session will discuss the latest science involving patient repositioning, including the landmark Duke University study, which uses the Leaf System to assess and document turning and mobility in nursing home residents.
"The field of pressure injury prevention has been long overdue for disruptive innovation," said Larson. "The current standard of care for pressure injury prevention is based on nursing practices developed over 150 years ago. The Leaf technology is positioned to completely revolutionize this fundamental care practice and advance the standard of care."
Pressure injuries are among the nation's most common facility-acquired conditions, affecting more than 2.5 million patients a year, and adding $11 billion to annual U.S. healthcare costs.
The innovative Leaf system tracks patient movement and activity in bed-bound, chair-bound, and ambulatory patients. Several studies have shown the Leaf System improves patient turning and mobility, reduces pressure injury rates, helps nurses prioritize patient care, improves unit workflow, and saves hospitals non-reimbursed costs associated with the treatment of pressure injuries, as well as rental bed costs.
