Predicting the Presidential Election Using T-Shirt Sales Data
COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- If you want to know how people really feel, look at how they spend their money. Opinion polls can be tricky in a way that sales reports are not.
The analytics team at Customized Girl has a unique insight into this year's election. Customized Girl is one of the only custom t-shirt platforms that is both (a) selling tons of political tees and (b) focused entirely on a female demographic.
So what do women want? We asked.
But first, it's important to understand how Customized Girl works. You can start with a blank item, or customize one of their designs. In the design center, you can add your own text, art, and images.
"We have a lot of great political art in our Add Art tab," says Kally Sweeney of Customized Girl, speaking about their interactive design tool. This art includes many faces of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. "We looked at which art was selling the most over the last 90 days. Hillary is selling about three times more than Trump."
Three-to-one seems like a big margin, but it is also important to look at this art in context. It turns out that only 2% of the Hillary art was used for anti-Hillary designs. But 25% of the Trump art was used for anti-Trump designs.
Popular Hillary designs include "On Wednesdays We Wear Pantsuits" and "Anything Bill Can Do, Hill Can Do Better".
From the perspective of Customized Girl, it looks as though women will be turning out in droves to vote for Clinton this November.
Looking at data from earlier in the year, Kally can see the peak months for Bernie Sanders shirts. Here's another twist: in February, March, and April, Bernie art was outselling Hillary by ten to one.
"Bernie supporters were very passionate about making great t-shirts," says Kally. Top selling concepts included "Feel the Bern" and "Babes for Bernie".
Now that Sanders has endorsed Clinton, will those same supporters come back to design their own Hillary shirts?
"We're hopeful," says Kally.
