Pre-Mixed Drinks Sector Maintains Global Momentum says New Market Research
LONDON, January 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
Global pre-mixed drinks sales rose by 6.3% in 2013 to a new record high of 370m nine-litre cases, according to a new just-drinks/The IWSR report.
The top two markets for RTDs (ready to drink), the US and Japan, both showed healthy growth in 2013, improving by 14m cases and 8.4m cases respectively. The report, titled 'Global RTD/RTS insights - market forecasts, product innovation and consumer trends research', describes the 17.2% growth in the US market to 95.4m cases as "particularly impressive". The US recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.6% between 2008 and 2013, adding some 34.1m cases over that five-year period.
However, the three next largest markets, Australia, Russia and the UK, all showed declines in 2013.
"Recent gains can mask the challenges that RTDs face in certain markets, such as the UK and Australia, where they have come under pressure from rival categories such as beer, cider, wine and spirits - all of which are increasingly embracing a richer palette of flavours," the report states.
Nevertheless, last year's performance continued a long-term upward trend that has seen the overall category gain 67.8m cases since 2009, the report states. Moreover, of the top 20 combined RTS (ready to serve) and RTD markets, 12 posted gains in 2013.
Although the top ten markets for mixed drinks currently account for 85% of global volumes, many of the smaller markets are currently showing "healthy growth", according to the report. As a result, in spite of facing challenges in some mature markets, the report forecasts the mixed drinks category will top 400m cases in 2016.
"RTDs have become one of the most innovative and adaptive categories in the alcohol world," the report says.
