Pratt & Whitney's Turboden Begins First Installation of Environmentally Friendly Heat Recovery System in North America

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., March 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Turboden, a Pratt & Whitney Power Systems company with long experience in the design and manufacturing of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power generation systems, is entering the North American market with the sale of a modular ORC unit in Canada.  Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.

The project, which is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2010 in western Canada at a TransGas Ltd. Gas Compressor Station, is managed by general contractor Innovative Steam Technologies.  In this installation, waste heat from the turbine exhaust gas is recovered and transformed into electrical energy by a Turboden ORC turbogenerator with a capacity of 1 megawatt of electrical energy (MW).

Turboden's ORC's are characterized by a high level of efficiency, reliability, low maintenance costs and ease of installation.  The ORC turbogenerator is the first Turboden unit with a heat recovery system downstream of a gas turbine.  Sizes range from 200 kilowatts of electrical energy (kW) to 2.7 MW (for standard units), complemented by Pratt & Whitney Power Systems' PureCycle® 280 kW ORC unit.  They can reach up to 7 MW for customized units.  In the heat recovery process, Turboden also offers a series of modular ORC units with high efficiency in sizes from 400 kW to 3 MW.  

In Europe, Turboden has four ORC units in operation that work on waste heat from internal combustion engines: one in Belgium, one in Austria and two in Italy. Five other units under construction will use heat from reciprocating engines and industrial stacks: three in Italy, two in Germany and one in Morocco.
