Pratt & Whitney Receives GreenCircle Award for Positive Contributions to Connecticut's Environmental Health
EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Dec. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection has awarded Pratt & Whitney (P&W) a GreenCircle Award for significant contributions made in pollution reduction at the company's East Hartford, Conn., facility. The award was accepted at a ceremony held at the DEEP, in Hartford, Conn. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.
The project was undertaken in support of United Technologies' sustainability initiatives, including a plan to reduce toxic water emissions and meet corporate pollution prevention goals. Since 2006, Pratt & Whitney has reduced greenhouse gases by 24 percent, water usage by 25 percent and air emissions by 57 percent.
An employee team was launched in March 2009, with the goal of reducing chemicals discharged into wastewater. The team discovered and implemented a new floor-cleaning process that eliminates the use of soap. The new eco-friendly machines reduce the amount of chemicals entering into wastewater, therefore reducing the volume of water that must be treated prior to discharge. After only one year of using the new process, P&W's East Hartford facility saw a 60 percent reduction in total measured metals discharged and a 25 percent reduction in water usage for the initiative.
"Pratt & Whitney is committed to sustainability, which ensures our business decisions benefit our employees, our community and the environment," said Mary Anne Cannon, vice president, Quality and Environment, Health & Safety, Pratt & Whitney. "This project is an example of the innovation of Pratt & Whitney employees as they continue to find new and better ways to make our communities cleaner and safer."
Pratt & Whitney was one of 37 award recipients for accomplishments realized in the 2010 calendar year. Since the CT DEEP started the GreenCircle program in 1998, 1,000 awards have been given for more than 1,400 projects. The awards represent achievements in energy conservation, transportation, pollution prevention or recycling-related activities or projects that promote natural resource conservation or environmental awareness.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and building industries.
