Pratt & Whitney Moves to the IBM Cloud to Manage Expected Growth
FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW, United Kingdom, July 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Corp. company (NYSE:UTX), and IBM (NYSE:IBM) today announced that Pratt & Whitney will move its enterprise systems, including engineering and manufacturing, to a fully managed and supported environment on the IBM Cloud infrastructure.
Due to the market success of its broad portfolio of commercial and military engines, Pratt & Whitney is expected to more than double engine production by 2020. Having made investments in its facilities, supply chain, technology and people, Pratt & Whitney is well-positioned to support the increase in engine production. The expanded facilities and an enhanced supply chain will result in significant data growth and the need to securely store, quickly access and take action with the new data.
"Working with IBM and moving our enterprise systems to a managed cloud service will give us the ability to scale quickly and meet the increased demands for computing services, data processing and storage based on Pratt & Whitney's forecasted growth" said Brian Galovich, vice president and chief information officer, Pratt & Whitney. "Data is one of the fastest growing resources we have, and it requires an environment to not only house it, but one that has the flexibility and scale to grow with it."
This builds off on an earlier agreement under which IBM is assisting Pratt & Whitney to broaden its current performance monitoring capabilities of operational commercial engines by leveraging the IBM analytics platform. These predictive capabilities help provide Pratt & Whitney customers with longer time on-wing, complement current asset maintenance alerts and deliver greater insight into flight operational data. Pratt & Whitney will host this data growth and workload on the IBM Cloud.
"IBM Cloud managed services will provide Pratt & Whitney with critical resources to manage, analyze and grow its infrastructure dynamically to accommodate the company's growth," said Philip Guido, general manager, IBM Services, North America. "Pratt & Whitney will be able to gain greater insights across its operations as it builds understanding and learning into its information technology."
