PPAHS to Present at ACI Annual Advanced Forum on Medical Liability, Claims, Coverage, and Risk Management

Michael Wong, JD, PPAHS executive director, will convene a panel titled "New Claims Trends Related to the U.S. Pain Crisis: Taking a Look at the Recent Prescription Opioid Abuse Epidemic and Its Impact on a New Wave of Med Mal Insurance Claims".  He will be joined by Linda Van Dillen, CompAlliance Managed Care; Michael D. Anderson, Sr. Claims Examiner & Risk Specialist Medical Insurance Exchange of California, Medical underwriters of California; and Keri Marmorek, Specialty Lines, Beazley USA.  The panel will occur on day two of the conference, October 28, 2016.

The panel will examine the latest trends in medical malpractice resulting from large-scale prescription of opioid abuse, including latest studies, at-risk patient groups, and effect on Medicare providers.  Mr. Wong will be presenting data collected from a recent PPAHS survey of responses to the latest Surgeon General's letter urging doctors to take part in solving the problem of opioid addiction in the U.S.

Mr. Wong believes that the data and insights presented during the panel will be invaluable in helping to understanding the current epidemic and developing actionable takeaways, "It's an important forum for tackling several aspects of the complex issue that is the opioid epidemic.  We'll be gathering the viewpoints of thought leaders from across industries; all stakeholders that will need to work together to address the problem."

The topic of opioid use has remained at the forefront of the the government and public eye.  The CDC estimates that nearly 2 million Americans abused or were dependent on opioids in 2014.  The FDA has issued a similar warning, expressing that it is "deeply concerned about the growing epidemic of opioid abuse, dependence and overdose in the United States".
