ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 19, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Poynter Institute, a global leader in journalism education, announced the official opening of The Innovation Lab @Poynter, a portion of its building which now houses nine digital startups that will share previously unused space.
The Innovation Lab @Poynter is located in the heart of the planned Innovation District in downtown St. Petersburg, near the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus and All Children's Hospital. It is now one of the largest clusters of startup companies in the Tampa Bay region.
"Throughout its nearly 40-year history, The Poynter Institute has been a place where innovation happens," said Poynter president Tim Franklin. "Now, however, we've actually set aside part of our building for startups to innovate in an environment of entrepreneurship -- one that is permeating our entire campus. The Innovation Lab @Poynter fits the city's mission to nurture new startups, and Poynter's strategy to make full use of its campus and foster a culture of invention."
The concentration of these cutting-edge companies at Poynter will continue to invigorate the city and Poynter's commitment to advance St. Petersburg's economic development efforts, according to the mayor's office.
"It is exciting to see how many new tenants are calling the Innovation Lab @Poynter home," said Mayor Rick Kriseman. "These new, vibrant startups not only inspire each other, but they bring a new energy to our city and our Innovation District.
