Poynter and Pioneer News Group Partner To Create Customized, Strategic Journalism Training Program
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., June 16, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Poynter Institute, a global leader in journalism, has entered an innovative partnership with the Pioneer News Group to offer up-to-date training structured to meet Pioneer News' strategic editorial goals.
The agreement is the third major training alliance Poynter has entered this year with media organizations – each designed to meet the specific needs of the organization. Earlier this year, Poynter announced custom training programs with the E.W. Scripps Co. and the McClatchy Co.
Pioneer News Group, based in Seattle, Wash., is a family-owned, multimedia company comprised of 23 small and mid-sized community newspapers in the Pacific Northwest.
The alliance will offer Pioneer News Group employees access to a range of Poynter's online courses, training packages and certificate programs at a reduced cost. Each of the training opportunities is designed to strengthen editorial skills and expand learning opportunities.
"Providing more training to Pioneer employees is one of our company goals and Poynter's programs met all of our requirements for newsroom education," said Pioneer News Group President and CEO Mike Gugliotto. "Their material is top notch and customizable with online delivery that's practical and easy to use."
The agreement includes access to a series of Webinars available to newsroom employees through Poynter's e-learning site, News University, plus three tailored certificate programs that target specific skill set needs. These include an Improve Your Writing Certificate, an Improve Your Editing Certificate (created in partnership with The American Copy Editors Society) and a Mobile and Social Media Journalism Certificate. In addition to offering the training, Poynter will consult with the organization on how to best implement the training operationally.
"Poynter's programs come with good reputation and credibility and have received high marks from others," added Gugliotto. "We're happy to partner with them."
"I'm excited about how we are working with Pioneer editors and publishers to create a training program that fits the needs of the Pioneer News Group. It is energizing to leverage our experiences in developing training partnerships for different-sized news organizations," said Howard Finberg, Poynter's Director of Business Development.
