POWERGRID International Editor in Chief Teresa Hansen announced the four winners live Monday, Jan. 27 during the Electric Light & Power and POWERGRID International Awards Dinner in San Antonio. The event kicked off the electric power industry's No. 1 transmission and distribution show in North America, DistribuTECH Conference & Exhibition, and its sister show, the Electric Light & Power Executive Conference.
"This is the first year we've announced the Projects of the Year winners live from the awards dinner instead of during the DistribuTECH keynote address, but tickets sold out," Hansen said. "That tells us there is enormous interest in what North America's best utilities are doing right, and people in the industry want a place to meet the people responsible for the success. The night before DistribuTECH opens is the perfect fit."
Hansen presented Pepco Holdings Inc. with the 2014 Demand Response/Energy Efficiency Project of the Year award for its Energy Wise Rewards program. The utility based in Washington, D.C., expressed special thanks to energy management provider Comverge Inc. for its contributions on the project.
New York City-based Consolidated Edison Inc. took first place in the Customer Engagement Project of the Year category for its coolNYC Program and mentioned work done by green technology company ThinkEco Inc.
Florida Power & Light Co. was named the Renewable Energy Integration Project of the Year for its Anti-Islanding Today, Successful Islanding in the Future for Distributed Generation program. The utility gave special thanks to electric power systems provider SEL.
Florida Power & Light Co. won again in the Smart Grid Project of the Year category for its Reaping the Benefits of the Smart Grid program and named vendors General Electric, Honeywell and Silver Spring Networks as helpful contributors.
Electric Light & Power magazine also honored its award winners. Hansen presented the Small Utility CEO of the Year award to Valley Electric Association CEO Thomas H. Husted and the Large Utility CEO of the Year award to Sacramento Municipal Utility District General Manager and CEO John Di Stasio.
The evening concluded with Hansen's presentation of the 2013 Electric Light & Power Utility of the Year award to PPL Corp. Chairman, President and CEO William H. Spence.
An article about the Projects of the Year will appear in the April issue of POWERGRID International magazine.
