LOVELAND, Colo., Feb. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- With community innovation at the core of their "open" philosophy, Aleph Objects, Inc., makers of the LulzBot™ line of desktop 3D printers, is celebrating Hardware Freedom Day by hosting a giveaway of their newest model, the TAZ 3. Valued at $2,195, TAZ 3D printers, along with accompanying starter kits, will be granted to eight hackerspaces at the forefront of innovation. The contest opens on March 1, and winners will be selected on March 15, Hardware Freedom Day, based on displays of creativity and contributions to the free software and open hardware community.
"Hackerspaces are passionately driving user innovation and creativity, especially within the 3D printing industry," said Jeff Moe, President of Aleph Objects, Inc. "Our goal is to get as many TAZ 3 printers into as many hackerspaces as possible. Our 3D printers are open, so users can continue to change, adapt and modify the technology to their individual needs."
Free software and Libre Hardware make the LulzBot TAZ the ideal hacker machine. It is the first hardware product and only 3D printer awarded the Free Software Foundation Respects Your Freedom (RYF) certification. Complete plans for printers, including the bill of materials, building plans, manual, firmware and software are publicly available on the website and under a copyright license that grants end users the legal right to learn from and modify the printer to meet individual needs. This reflects the vision of Hardware Freedom Day, "to empower all people to freely connect, create and share in a digital world that is participatory, transparent and sustainable."
