Power Engineering and Renewable Energy World name Projects of the Year Awards finalists

TULSA, Okla. and NASHUA, N.H., Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The editors of Power Engineering and Renewable Energy World magazine and their respective websites have announced 17 finalists for the annual Projects of the Year Awards program.

The finalists were selected from eight major categories: Coal, Gas, Nuclear, Solar, Wind, Bioenergy, Hydro/Marine and Geothermal.

For the first time in the award program, there is a tie in the Best Solar Project category.  The three finalists are the Solar Electrification of 57 Remote Villages in the Andhra Pradesh, India; the Solar-Agro-Electric model from Abelon Clean Energy in India; and the 50-MW Godawari Green Energy Project in Rajasthan, India.

The Best Coal Project finalists are Duke Energy's Cliffside Modernization Project in Cliffside, N.C. and the John W. Turk Plant in Fulton, Ark., owned by American Electric Power.

The finalists for Best Wind Project are BrightSource Energy's Marble River Wind Farm in Clinton, N.Y., and the Bison Wind Project Phase 2 and 3, owned by Minnesota Power in New Salem, N.D.

The 2013 Best Gas Project finalists are the Cape Canaveral Clean Energy Center in Brevard County, Fla. and the El Segundo Energy Center in El Segundo, Calif., both by Siemens Energy.

The Best Bioenergy Project finalists are the Sacramento BioDigester by CleanWorld in Sacramento, Calif., and the Nexterra's Renewable Energy CHP Project at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

The Best Nuclear finalists are the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Units 3 and 4 Extended Power Uprate project, completed by Bechtel in Florida, and Florida Power & Light's Extended Power Uprate Project in Florida.

The Best Hydro Project finalists are Alstom's Xiangjiaba hydroelectric power plant in China, and the North Fork Skokomish Powerhouse and Fish Passage Facility, owned by Tacoma Power near Hoodsport, Wash.

The Best Geothermal Project finalists are the Ngatamariki Geothermal Power Plant in Taupo, New Zealand, and the McGinness Hills Geothermal Power Plant in Lander County, Nev., both owned by Ormat Technologies Inc.
