Pornography Promotes Sex Trafficking, Says Morality in Media
Events highlight prevalence of trafficking on Internet and ex-porn stars testimonials
WASHINGTON, July 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Morality in Media's four-week "Be Aware: PORN HARMS" National Awareness Campaign begins week three with events revealing the links between pornography and sex trafficking.
"Pornography is not only used to train traffic victims, but it also breaks down the conscience of its viewer," said President of Morality in Media Patrick Trueman. "Men are encouraged to act on what they see and, often times, those actions are taken out on victims of trafficking."
Over 70 national and state groups are organizing the campaign that focuses on four harms of pornography: pornography addiction, harms to children, links to sex trafficking and violence against women.
This week:
- Tues, 7/26 - All Day: Twitter Chat: "Questions answered about the human sex trade." Join the conversation or ask a question by including #trafficked in your Tweet.
- Wed, 7/27 - 5:00 p.m. EDT: Live Online Event: "The virtual brothel – human trafficking has moved to the Internet" featuring Dr. Janice Crouse, Concerned Women of America and Nancy Winston, Shared Hope International.
- Thurs, 7/28 - 10:30 a.m. EDT: Live Online Event: "How is pornography linked to increased demand for sexual trafficking?" with expert Laura Lederer, Global Centurion.
- Thurs, 7/28 - 6:30 p.m. EDT: New York City Film Screening and Panel Discussion: "Everyday Johns: Exposing the Underbelly of the Sex Trade" organized by NOW-NYC.
"People will be surprised how much sex trafficking goes on right here in the U.S.," said Dawn Hawkins MIM's executive director and Director of the Be Aware: PORN HARMS campaign. "A recent trend involves pornographers offering their viewers the ability to create custom live porn, where victims are forced to engage in heinous sexual acts on a web cam."
Morality in Media is directing addicts and their families to free counseling and subscriptions to Web protection services.
