For people wondering what they can do to improve their fireplace, Kelly Cruz of Kelly Cruz Interiors, a local Charlotte area interior design professional, recommends people with air vented fire places get their chimney cleaned annually, and advises homeowners with gas fireplaces to "have their gas company check for any leaks and make sure the pilot light is working properly." Other typical fireplace projects include everything from hiring a mason to give your fireplace a facelift, a full rebuild of the firebox, or a refacing of the chimney's exterior.
Beyond fireplace maintenance and repair, Cruz has a few creative ideas to spruce up any fireplace. One suggestion she has is to place candles and decorative lanterns inside the fireplace to give a festive and decorative flare. Jack-O-Lanterns would be a great decorative item to place in a fireplace with Halloween quickly approaching. Additionally, there is heat resistant paint that can be used to paint the back of the fireplace to spruce it up.
