Pop Artist Sean D'Anconia Selected By Disney To Showcase Work At "WonderGround Gallery" Grand Opening

LOS ANGELES, June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Sean D'Anconia has been commissioned by Disney to debut his eye-popping, cult-cinematic take on Mickey Mouse, "MOUSETOWN," at the grand opening of WonderGround Gallery on June 9th at the Downtown Disney® District (Disneyland® Resort). 

D'Anconia is a rising pop artist based in Los Angeles whose iconoclastic work merges cult cinema and animation to define a new twenty-first century graphic aesthetic. He joins an exclusive group of artists selected by Disney to present their unique interpretations of Disney favorites at WonderGround, where the opening show will feature both Pixar-related art and various tributes to the one and only Mickey Mouse.

D'Anconia's "MOUSETOWN," which employs multimedia techniques combined with acrylic paint, culminates in a colorful, wide-frame homage to the world's most famous Mouse. "I wanted to see Mickey return to his retro roots but also updated, placing our hero into a stylized film noir setting, something akin to 1974's 'Chinatown' meets Murakami's '1Q84,'" explains D'Anconia. "In my tale, Mickey picks up a deck of magical cards belonging to Yen Sid (Fantasia) and is transported to an alternate reality as MOUSETOWN's detective, where he must solve an incredible mystery to have any hope of returning to his world, while saving this one."

The East-meets-West, cinematic stylization of D'Anconia's work is ever apparent in "MOUSETOWN," where Minnie is adorned as a Kabuki actress, Mickey wears a Hakama, and a large "Rising Mouse" sun shines in the background.

The mixed-media original painting will be on display at WonderGround Gallery, starting June 9th, when D'Anconia will be on hand from 3-5pm signing prints and meeting fans. D'Anconia is currently working on a CARS (Pixar) homage also to be unveiled at WonderGround.

WonderGround Gallery is located in the Downtown Disney® District (1500 Disneyland Drive, Anaheim, CA) between D Street and Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen.
