PolyOne Helps ACP Succeed with Advanced Materials
CLEVELAND, Nov. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --PolyOne Corporation (NYSE: POL), a premier global provider of specialized polymer materials, services and solutions, today announced that ACP (www.acptechnologies.com), a leading manufacturer of electronics components, has selected Edgetek™ AM Non-Halogenated Flame Retardant Solutions from PolyOne for its newest line of micro-potentiometers. This advanced material provides a cost-efficient and environmentally conscious material solution for molding these critical devices used to control consumer and industrial electronics.
"This specialty solution was focused on achieving the high performance standards needed for ACP to reach its growth objectives for micro-potentiometer applications while also furthering the company's goal of reducing the environmental impact of its devices," commented PolyOne's Holger Kronimus, general manager, Engineered Materials Europe.
ACP (Aragonesa de Componentes Pasivos SA; Tarazona, Spain) sets extremely high standards for materials used to manufacture its electronic components. ACP's micro-potentiometers are critical for dividing voltage and measuring electric potential to control volume and other levels in both industrial and consumer electronic devices.
As consumer electronic devices become smaller, thinner and more versatile, the space available within these devices for electronic components is also shrinking. The material solutions chosen for these applications must exhibit a balance of characteristics. These include self-extinguishing behavior upon exposure to flame, dimensional stability, creep resistance at high temperatures, sufficient mechanical and electrical performance, ease of coloring, ease of processing for thin wall parts in multi-cavity tools, and ability to withstand Surface Mount Technology (SMT) temperatures and solder materials.
PolyOne engineered materials experts worked closely with ACP to develop a non-halogenated flame retardant solution able to be used in existing injection molds. This, in turn, helped ACP differentiate its offerings from those of its competitors and achieve its ambitious financial and sustainability goals. PolyOne's close collaboration with ACP also enabled a fine-tuning of the Edgetek™ AM solution for optimum performance and processing.
"This project demonstrates the ingenuity of the designers and engineers at ACP and the ability of PolyOne to support them with high-end polymer solutions that stand apart in the marketplace and contribute to the customers' bottom line," added Mr. Kronimus.
