Polsinelli Creates New Department to Accommodate Growing Intellectual Property Needs
The Intellectual Property Practice Group becomes the firm's fourth department
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Polsinelli announced today that it will elevate Intellectual Property as a fourth Service Department to serve alongside Polsinelli's existing Business, Litigation, and Real Estate and Financial Services Departments.
Recognizing the increased client focus on IP and in building upon the significant growth the firm saw for this work in 2016, this realignment enhances Polsinelli's ability to serve its clients and will provide a platform for the firm's projected continued investment into this practice area.
"We have been steadfast in our focus to strategically build our national Intellectual Property practice as a priority service area of the firm," said Polsinelli Chairman Russ Welsh. "This new Intellectual Property Department – and the strong team we have in place – affirms our commitment to serve clients across industries in the full range of IP services."
Polsinelli's IP team is one of the largest practices in the nation, comprised of more than 120 attorneys, patent agents and scientists working in cities coast to coast. The new IP Department will have two divisions, Science and Technology, and IP Proceedings and Litigation, and nine practice groups. Shareholder Patrick Woolley, the former IP practice chair, will lead the new Department. Shareholders Gregory Novak and Tracy W. Druce will serve as vice chairs.
"The new infrastructure provides additional resources and services to the practice, enabling us to better partner with our clients in all areas of IP," Woolley said. "Our team's collective – and expanding – expertise includes both domestic and foreign issues, and we are able to work in a variety of areas including patents, trademarks, copyright, licensing, litigation, trade secret litigation, patent litigation, and business advice and guidance."
Less than a year ago, Polsinelli's IP practice grew by nearly 50 attorneys when it integrated Houston-based boutique Novak Druce Connolly Bove & Quigg, LLP in March 2016. Later that same year, Polsinelli was named one of four "IP Litigation Powerhouses" in the BTI Litigation Outlook Report and a Top Patent Law Firm by IPWatchdog, earned several high rankings by Chambers USA in IP, and secured the No. 24 spot in Corporate Counsel's Patent Litigation Survey.
"Polsinelli has an impressive team in place and we will continue our focus of building and strengthening our IP Department," Novak said. "This new structure aligns with the overall firm strategy and will advance our ability to collaborate across the country and across disciplines to ensure our clients are best served."
