Poll Shows Overwhelming Support For Legalization Of Cannabis In NJ As Long As Revenues Are Put To Good Use
Two Thirds of New Jersey Residents Support Legalization of Recreational Cannabis as a Means to Property Tax Relief, Criminal Justice Reform and Social and Racial Justice
HENDERSON, Colo., Sept. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Nuka Enterprises announced today findings from one of the most extensive polls ever completed of NJ residents on cannabis legalization. The state-wide survey, conducted by TargetSmart, revealed general support for legalization of cannabis for adult use in New Jersey, but that support skyrocketed when respondents were asked about application of state revenue generated from the cannabis industry.
The poll shows an overwhelming two-thirds of Garden Staters in agreement that legalizing cannabis and taxing its sale should be on the table as a means of providing property tax relief (64 percent agree), that New Jersey arrests too many people for marijuana possession (67 percent agree), and that legalizing cannabis will free up local police to concentrate on violent crime (67 percent agree). New Jersey residents express overwhelmingly favorable attitudes towards the notions of "property tax relief" (60 percent favorable to 17 percent unfavorable), "criminal justice reform" (49 percent favorable to 15 percent unfavorable), and "social and racial justice" (54 percent favorable to 19 percent unfavorable).
"This research shows the vast majority of New Jersey residents support legalization of recreational cannabis when connected to two key considerations: economic relief as well as criminal, social and racial justice reform," said Peter Barsoom, CEO of Nuka Enterprises. "A key insight stemming from the research is that all of these issues are deeply connected in New Jersey. Economic relief won't just come from tax revenue, it will be generated by the millions of dollars saved by reforming the criminal justice system and by the economic stimulus of creating jobs and business opportunities to our under-served communities."
A recent ACLU study found that throughout the past decade New Jersey has spent more than $1 billion to enforce marijuana possession laws. The collective cost of police, courts and corrections total more than $143 million per year in New Jersey – resources that could be allocated to tax relief as well as programs that support criminal, social and racial justice reform. Of note, the TargetSmart poll found men, younger NJ residents and people of color are all more likely to be supporters of legalization, with African American men supporting legalization by a 47-point margin.
Additional results from the TargetSmart poll include significant interest in edibles (62 percent of those interested in purchasing products in a legal cannabis market were very/somewhat interested in trying edibles) versus smokable flower (51%).

TargetSmart designed and administered this telephone survey conducted by professional interviewers. The survey reached 1,500 adults, age 18 or older, who indicated they were at least 18 years old and reside in New Jersey. The survey was conducted from August 9-19, 2018. The sample was randomly selected from TargetSmart's enhanced voter file. Fifty percent of respondents were reached on wireless phones. Quotas were assigned to reflect the demographic distribution of the voting age population of New Jersey. The data were weighted by race from file, party registration, and registration status to ensure an accurate reflection of the population. The overall margin of error is +/- 2.5%. The margin of error for subgroups is larger and varies. Percentage totals may not add up precisely due to rounding.
