Poll Shows Movement in Pittsburgh Mayoral Primary
LEMOYNE, Pa., April 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pittsburgh Democratic Mayoral primary is a two-person race between Jack Wagner and Bill Peduto, according to a poll released by Keystone Analytics®.
Former Auditor General Jack Wagner has gained significant support since announcing his candidacy, with 38 percent of likely voters saying they would vote for him if the election were held today. Current Councilman Bill Peduto has held relatively steady with 31 percent support.
Both Wagner and Peduto have high name recognition and favorability, with Wagner at 95 percent total name recognition and 60 percent favorable, and Peduto at 93 percent total name recognition and 58 percent favorable. Peduto is up by 11 percent among 18-49 year-olds, but Wagner wins among 65 and older by 16-points.
In a poll conducted March 4-5, 2013 by Keystone Analytics®, Peduto appeared strongest out of the gate with 30 percent of likely Democratic Primary voters saying they would vote for him if the election were held today. Twenty percent indicated they would vote for Wagner.
Since the first poll, several key events have taken place and may indicate why Wagner has seen an 18 percent bump in likely voters. City Controller Michael Lamb dropped from the race and endorsed Wagner. The increase in likely Wagner voters seems to suggest that Lamb voters have transitioned their support to Wagner. In addition, Wagner has received several key endorsements from Senator Jim Ferlo and local public-safety unions.
Other candidates lagged by considerable margins, with only 1 percent of voters saying they plan to vote for A.J. Richardson and 4 percent for Jake Wheatley.
Results are based on a live telephone survey of 400 likely Democratic primary voters in Pittsburgh and includes a +/-4.9 percent margin of error. Interviews were conducted on April 2-3, 2013. Full survey summary is available online.
