Political Rivals Join Together To Call For Safeguards To Ensure Free And Fair Election On June 28th
--Clyde Williams And Adam Clayton Powell Say Systematic Problems, In NY-13 Are Riddled With Illegal Politicking Leading To Public Mistrust Of The Board Of Elections--
NEW YORK, April 28, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A letter to the Board of Elections written by Clyde Williams and joined by Candidate Adam Clayton Powell IV has been sent requesting additional procedures and precautions be instituted in order to ensure a free and fair election on June 28th. Well prior to the publicized problems with voting throughout New York City during the April 19th Presidential Primary, there have been multiple problems with the conduct in various NY-13 elections that the Board of Election is aware of.
Adam Clayton Powell IV explained, "From insufficient language assistance for non-English speakers, to providing incorrect voter information, to not offering or allowing affidavit ballots, it is clear there is a distinct pattern with the Board of Elections. It is time we put in sensible solution so that everyone can do their civic duty to vote."
Along with these systematic problems, elections in NY-13 have been riddled with illegal politicking. This has led to a lack of trust in the Board of Elections throughout New York City and the District."
Clyde Williams commended, "For cycle after cycle there have been major problems with people being disenfranchised from voting in the 13th district. Political clubs and certain representatives have used intimidation and misinformation to prevent people from running and voting in elections. We have Board of Election officials and poll workers who are directly affiliated with candidates working those races- a clear conflict of interest. The Board of Elections needs to put procedures in place to make sure we don't continue the fixable problems of the past."
The candidates are calling for various corrective actions to ensure a free and fair election including Request the recusal of any BOE official affiliated with any candidate who is currently running for the NY-13 seat, Ensure that poll workers are independently assigned to polling locations on election day, and provide independent supervision at the Board of Elections headquarters and polling locations throughout the 13th District, among others requests.
Williams' continued, "It's imperative that people have the ability to exercise their Constitutional right to vote and we want to ensure that this happens. Poll workers need to be trained on affidavit ballot rules, prevention of candidate and campaign electioneering, and many other regular problems. We need the BOE to step up to address these issues before it is too late to do so and disenfranchise voters."
Clyde Williams and Adam Clayton Powell are Democratic candidates for New York's 13th Congressional District. The primary takes place June 28th.
