ALLENTOWN, Pa., Sept. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As a company with a strong heritage in helping patients with lung disease PMD Healthcare is proud to recognize and support Pulmonary Fibrosis month this September. PMD encourages everyone to become engaged, and educated about Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF).
Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) is a term used to describe a family of diseases that affect the lungs. Pulmonary meaning "lung" and fibrosis meaning "scar tissue," thus (PF) means scarring in the lungs. Over time scar tissue builds up in the lungs making it hard for oxygen to get into the blood. This results in a shortness of breath when walking or exercising. Often times it can be difficult for physicians to identify the cause of (PF), in such instances this is referred to as Idiopathic (no known cause) Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).
Since diagnosing PF can be difficult the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation strongly recommends that everyone with a suspected or established diagnosis of PF be seen at a center that specializes in the care of people with PF. This is very important because determining which type of Pulmonary Fibrosis you have can help predict how quickly your disease will progress, and what the best treatments are. You can find a list of PF centers on the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundations website www.pulomanryfibrosis.org.
To assist in determining the correct diagnosis physicians will complete numerous tasks and test inclusive of your medical history, a physical exam, X-Ray's, blood tests, pulmonary function test and other tests as needed.
Given the variability in progression of pulmonary fibrosis these is no standard treatment course. Since some patients remain stable for extended periods of time and other experience rapid onset of symptoms, treatment plans are highly customized to each individual patient.
