ALLENTOWN, Pa., Feb. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Rare Disease Day brings awareness to the impact that rare disease has on many people and is recognized on the last day of February each year. A rare disease is defined as something that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans.
Rare Disease Day is dedicated to increasing awareness of these diseases, raising additional funding for the search and development to support advances in medicine and technology that will improve the care and quality of life for the patients who suffer from rare diseases.
While there are many rare diseases, several affect pulmonary function. Theses include Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).
Cystic Fibrosis is a rare, chronic, genetic disease that affects the secretory glands resulting in an over production of mucus that overtime leads to pulmonary difficulties. There are approximately 30,000 people living with Cystic Fibrosis in the United States today.
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is a rare, progressive disease that results in the accumulation of scar tissue in the lungs. Over time the lung become stiff and begin to experience problems with expansion and contraction. As a result, patients begin to have difficulty breathing. Today there are approximately 100,000 people in the United States with IPF.
