PMC and City of Rio Rancho, NM Honored for Excellence in Transportation Planning
New Mexico American Planning Association Recognizes Collaborative Effort and Innovation
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif., Oct. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The New Mexico chapter of the American Planning Association awarded PMC and the City of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, with its annual Transportation Master Plan Award for Innovation in Planning and Transportation. The award was given for the collaborative effort between PMC and Rio Rancho for work on the City of Rio Rancho Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (BPMP).
"The City would like to thank APA New Mexico for this award," said Jay Hart, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department Director for Rio Rancho. "It is an honor to receive this award and is a reflection on the outstanding job that staff and PMC did in the creation of the Plan. The Plan will help guide us in making Rio Rancho more pedestrian and bicycle friendly as the city grows."
"We're honored to be sharing this award with the City and are happy to be a part of creating a more sustainable future for Rio Rancho," said PMC Senior Associate, Eric Norris. "The BPMP's main goal is to increase resident's access to healthy modes of transportation such as pedestrian and bike trails, but also calls for access to a wide variety of recreational opportunities, taking advantage of the city's beautiful weather which allows for year-round outdoor activities."
The BPMP recommends adding 50 miles of new trails, 82 miles of new bicycle lanes, 18 miles of new bicycle routes and many pedestrian and bicycle connection and amenity improvements throughout Rio Rancho. These improvements and others outlined in the plan will equal an annual reduction of almost one million miles of vehicle travel per year and a resulting annual reduction of 745-million metric tons of CO2, when fully implemented.
The BPMP award was presented at the 31st annual Western Planner/Four Corners American Planning Association Conference held in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
