PARIS, Nov. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- OPENSTACK SUMMIT -- PLUMgrid, a leading innovator of virtual network infrastructure for OpenStack clouds, has announced today that it has incorporated third party open source SDN functions from OpenContrail, Quagga, Bird, and pfSense on the PLUMgrid Platform™ to provide a single service insertion architecture that simplifies and accelerates the adoption of virtual network services.
Built for enterprises and service providers deploying SDN/NFV infrastructure, PLUMgrid Platform is designed as an extensible architecture that serves as the foundation for the creation and management of L2-L7 virtual network services. With support for modular service insertion, the PLUMgrid architecture is capable of adding third party services from PLUMgrid partners or community-built open source software modules and support service chaining.
A New Way to Deploy Open Source SDN
Leveraging Docker based containers or virtualized machines for service insertion, the PLUMgrid Platform provides a segmented data center environment through Virtual Domains™ to run open source SDN, thus enabling users to develop, test or deploy SDN/NFV rapidly.
The open source SDN and network functions that have been validated are:
- OpenContrail, an open source SDN suite based on Apache 2.0 License, provides controller and virtual router services.
- Quagga, distributed as part of GNU public license, provides open source routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, and IS-IS for Unix based hosts.
- Bird, an Internet routing daemon, offers IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, BGP, etc.
- pfSense, an open source firewall and router distribution, provides a wide range of functions for stateful firewall, captive portal, and VPNs.
Delivering Agility for SDN and NFV Deployments
The above four open source SDN software were selected for incorporation into the PLUMgrid Platform based on user demand. With the myriad of open source SDN and NFV projects, users were able to leverage a platform based approach to build on top with more control on configuration, service definition, and management. PLUMgrid Platform ensures high availability with intelligent restart for processes without impact to data plane forwarding.
Comprehensive Operations and Management
With PLUMgrid Life Cycle Manager and Console, users can automate deployment, while using simple click-and-drop configuration and management of services. Monitoring and health reporting is supported through the PLUMgrid Operations Center.
The platform based approach also provides consistency and common set of tools with open APIs. The PLUMgrid Platform ships with native tools for network visibility and analytics. The platform provides powerful insights into the virtual network health that help data center operators quickly and easily identify failures and performance issues in the network.
Supporting Quote
"Enterprises and operators, who are building out private clouds, are evaluating open source and proprietary virtual network functions as part of SDN/NFV. With the PLUMgrid Platform, we are offering a common service insertion architecture with containerized Docker architecture for them to develop, integrate, and deploy virtualized network services rapidly."
