COCOA, Fla., April 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- BullFrog® sunscreen CEO Stuart J. Straus said some pitchers may think mixing rosin with BullFrog gives them a better grip in cold or wet weather, but actually most Major Leaguers use BullFrog to protect against skin cancer.
BullFrog is proudly made in the USA by Cocoa, Fla.-based Sun & Skin Care Research, LLC, which also makes Ocean Potion and NO-AD sunscreen and skin care products.
"Major League Baseball has a legacy of players who have survived skin cancer," Straus said, "including such names as Curt Schilling, Mike Schmidt, and Johnny Bench." In fact, Bench was named spokesperson for the 2012 Play Sun Smart™, a joint program by MLB, the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) and the American Academy of Dermatology to raise awareness of skin cancer.
"Does BullFrog give hurlers a trick pitch?" Straus asked. "Who can say for sure?"
Straus said the annual baseball controversy about BullFrog sunscreen being mixed with rosin by pitchers who want a better grip actually serves to put the focus back on melanoma prevention. "Skin cancer is a legitimate concern for Major Leaguers."
Straus added: "If I were a player who spends six months or more under the sun's UV rays, I'd be way more focused on having consistent access to a durable SPF50 sunscreen like BullFrog than I would about rumors regarding trick pitches.
"Concern about the suspected rosin-and-sunscreen practice is valid. But I'd hate for commissioner Rob Manfred to act on anecdotal evidence to ban BullFrog."
Because BullFrog has a vital role to play in the fight against skin cancer, Straus has written to each of the general managers of the 30 Major League Baseball clubs, enclosing complimentary samples of BullFrog sunscreen — which, he suggested "become standard equipment in the Major Leagues."
BullFrog sunscreens, including Marathon Mist™, WaterArmor™ Sport Quick Gel, InstaCool, new Quik Stick, and Lip Balm provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 50 protection.
The Skin Cancer Foundation noted that in the U.S. skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. One American dies of melanoma almost every hour, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Following is the text of Straus's "Play Ball With BullFrog" letter to MLB clubs:
General Manager
Major League Baseball ClubDear Sir:
Is BullFrog® sunscreen actually being rubbed into rosin by pitchers who believe it provides better control in cold or rain? We're not certain.
What we are sure of is that in recent years BullFrog has garnered lots of ink in baseball media — and for what we think are all the wrong reasons.
Rather than reporting on the need for wider sunscreen use to fight the incidence of skin cancer among Major Leaguers, much hay has been made about sunscreen as a constituent in a potential "foreign substance."
We believe BullFrog has become as popular as it is among Major Leaguers because it is effective and durable. What players want (and need) is sure-fire protection from the sun — just as surfers have since BullFrog was invented for them in 1985. So, should players be concerned about someone suspecting BullFrog might give a pitcher an edge? Or should they be worried about spending half the year under cancer-causing UV rays without genuine BullFrog SPF50 protection that resists sweating off?
On behalf of Sun & Skin Care Research, LLC, of Cocoa, Florida, I want to ask Major League Baseball to support the use of the very best sunscreen.
BullFrog and all of our sun care and skincare products are proudly made right here in the USA. We believe BullFrog plays a "major" role in America's national pastime — and should continue to do so!
So, please — play ball with BullFrog!
Best regards,
Stuart J. Straus
