CLEVELAND, Aug. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Sales of plastic residential doors is forecast to advance 4.4% per year to $2.2 billion in 2022. Faster sales gains are projected for the new construction market, as builders increasingly recognize the performance benefits of vinyl and fiberglass exterior doors and their attractiveness to potential homeowners. These and other trends are presented in Residential Windows & Doors Market in the US, 2nd Edition, a new study from The Freedonia Group, a Cleveland-based industry research firm.

Unlike wood doors, the larger share of plastic door sales is generated by replacement doors, which accounted for 57% of the residential market in 2017. The replacement market is larger for plastic because the material is primarily used in the manufacture of exterior doors, which typically have shorter lifespans than interior products due to more intensive foot traffic and damage from weather and climate conditions. Many homeowners are also more likely to replace older exterior doors, as these products have more visibility and therefore affect a home's curb appeal.
Sales of all types of residential windows and doors are forecast to grow 3.7% per year to $24.4 billion in 2022. Increased spending on new housing and renovation activity will drive sales gains, as will a shift in product mix toward higher value windows and doors. Homeowners are expected to increasingly opt for products that offer superior performance and aesthetics, typically sold at higher price points.
