CHICAGO, May 1, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- On Monday, April 29, Pilot Light announced founding of the Food Education Fellowship. In collaboration with Pilot Light staff, fellows will develop and implement food education lessons and evaluate food education effectiveness within their classrooms.
Last fall, Pilot Light released the first-ever nationwide set of recommendations for food education for K-12 students, the Food Education Standards. The Food Education Standards were developed in collaboration with notable Chicago chefs Paul Kahan (One Off Hospitality), Matthias Merges (Folk Art Management) and Jason Hammel (Lula Café and Marisol), as well as nutrition and education experts and faculty from the University of Chicago, Columbia University, the United States Department of Agriculture and a teacher development team comprising Chicago Public Schools faculty.
Building upon the release of the Food Education Standards, Pilot Light created the Food Education Fellowship to help teachers implement food education in their classrooms. Through the Food Education Fellowship, fellows will provide weekly food education in their classrooms, incorporating food as a lens for traditional subjects, such as Math, Reading, History and Science. Fellows will develop food education lesson plans, evaluate the effects of food education in the classroom, and act as liaisons with school leaders, community partners and parents to deepen Pilot Light's impact in their communities.
"As we continue to grow and expand, we are looking at new and impactful ways to support Chicago teachers and students," said Katie Colvin, Pilot Light education director. "With the founding of the Food Education Fellowship, we are excited about the opportunity to provide teachers a pathway to become leaders within food education."
Pilot Light is seeking highly-motivated K-12 teachers in Chicago with an interest in implementing food education lessons consistently in their classroom to apply. Pilot Light currently serves 17 schools and 2,268 students in under-resourced communities in Chicago.
