WATERMILL, N.Y., Aug. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday more than 350 people gathered at the beautiful Equuleus Polo Club in Watermill, New York to cheer the return to the field of polo legend Nacho Figueras in a tournament benefiting New York's Robin Hood Foundation. Figueras, who had been sidelined since May with a devastating hip injury, played alongside fellow world class polo players including Juan Martin Nero, Mariano Aguerre, Mariano Gonzalez and Magoo Laprida.
While last year's tournament raised more than $425,000 for Robin Hood, this year the event raised more than $500,000 which will benefit hundreds of the most effective schools, job training programs, medical services, food programs and homeless shelters throughout the five boroughs.
In addition to a hard-fought match between teams from St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and Credit Suisse, more than 80 children took part in the festivities, which included sunset polo lessons, pony rides, arts & crafts, and a traditional Argentine "asado" barbeque.
Co-chairs for the event were Figueras and his wife Delfina Blaquier, Diana & Joe DiMenna, Larry Boland, Lise & Michael Evans and Mary Kathryn & Alex Navab. Vice chairs were Alainn & Stefano Natella, Gabby Karan De Felice & Gianpaolo De Felice and Paul James.
The event was fully underwritten by Presenting Sponsor Piaget, Team Sponsors St. Regis Hotels and Resorts and Credit Suisse-- with generous support from the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation and Gotham Jets—so 100% of ticket costs went directly to Robin Hood-funded programs throughout the city.
"Polo is a great way for families to spend time together while helping our neighbors in need," said Diana DiMenna, benefit co-chair and wife of Equuleus Polo's Joe DiMenna. "My husband Joe and I have been supporters of Robin Hood for many years, and it brings us great pleasure to introduce so many of our friends and neighbors to Robin Hood's unparalleled poverty-fighting approach."
"We are proud to be back again, partnering with Nacho and Robin Hood for the second annual Piaget Hamptons Cup," said Larry Boland, President of Piaget North America. "Polo is part of our heritage and when we can combine that with an opportunity to help our local community, everyone wins."
"Yesterday's event at Equuleus was truly inspiring and all of us at Robin Hood are grateful to the organizers, sponsors, and guests of the Piaget Hamptons Cup Polo Match for their generous support," said David Saltzman, executive director of Robin Hood. "Thanks to their generosity, Robin Hood will be able to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of New Yorkers who are working to build better lives for themselves and their families."
