Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safety Debuts PPAHS Patient Safety Podcast Series Exploring Important National Patient Safety Issues
CHICAGO, July 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- At the encouragement of the patient safety community, the Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safety (PPAHS) has introduced the PPAHS Patient Safety Podcast, an ongoing series of online discussions that will explore important patient safety issues at health care facilities across the U.S.
Focusing on opioid safety (pain management), venous thromboembolism (blood clots), and alarm management (noise fatigue), the PPAHS Patient Safety Podcast will offer in-depth interviews with thought leaders, researchers, patients and health care professionals to bring a diverse set of perspectives on key national patient safety issues.
"When the patient safety community suggested we host a podcast on critical patient safety issues, we thought it was a great idea," said PPAHS Community Manager Sean Power. "We love presenting PPAHS stories at conferences and on our website, and there is so much progress being made in patient safety by others, we thought a podcast would be a perfect avenue to share those stories, too."
PPAHS Executive Director Michael Wong, JD., agreed, adding that, "In our mission to create a national discussion on important patient safety issues – and as a result, help protect the lives and safety of thousands of patients across the U.S. -- the PPAHS Patient Safety Podcast adds a powerful resource to our toolbox."
The PPAHS Patient Safety Podcast debuted with Sharon Butler, Clinical Nurse IV, Perioperative Services, Stanford University Medical Center as its first guest. Ms. Butler recently implemented an improvement project to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in surgical patients by applying sequential compression devices (SCD) in the pre-op unit, since research literature has demonstrated that early initiation of SCD before the actual induction of anesthesia helps to maximize DVT/PE prevention.
