Physical Activity at the Office Can Help Provide Significant Health Benefits and Boost Your Exercise Routine
NAPLES, Fla., May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of National Employee Health and Fitness Day on May 18th, Dr. Sean Wells, the fitness expert at BistroMD, reviews significant health benefits that can be achieved by exercising at the office.
Increasing your levels of physical activity at the office not only provides immediate health benefits, but is also an ideal way to transition into a more structured exercise routine outside of the office.
"Our clients at BistroMD bring our weight loss meals to the office. They often ask me what they can do while they are at work to burn extra calories and increase muscle tone," said Dr. Wells.
As a Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and as the fitness expert for BistroMD, an industry leader in home diet delivery, Dr. Wells knows how important it is to set aside time to exercise.
"Through my years of experience working with clients, I always try to emphasize the importance of physical activity at the office," says Dr. Wells. "For many people, regular bouts of activity at work can actually increase overall work performance, including productivity, which can help add years to your life, and can even lower your risk of certain health conditions, like heart disease."
Little things, like switching your desk chair for an inflatable fitness ball, are also easy ways to incorporate exercise into your workday.
"If you find yourself sitting at a desk all day, there are certain exercises you can do that don't require very intense bouts of activity," says Dr. Wells. "Instead of sitting in a typical desk chair, try replacing it with an inflatable fitness ball. Inflatable fitness balls can improve your balance and tone abdominal muscles during the day."
You can also take advantage of office-sponsored gyms or lunch breaks. A gym and a normal lunch break can provide ample time to push some weights or walk on a treadmill.
Dr. Wells also recommends using your break time to take a brisk walk, or to take a stroll outside.
"Just 10-15 solid minutes of brisk walking at the office during a break is a great way to start," says Wells. "If you dedicate 10 minutes to exercise, 3 times a day, for 5 days a week, you will accumulate a total of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This will help improve your overall health and will motivate you to do more intense aerobic exercises outside of work."
Physical activity is foundational for optimal health and reducing your risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular heart disease.
"Exercise is the most natural way to help treat certain health conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes," says Dr. Wells.
Research shows that a healthy diet is as important, if not more important, as physical activity and exercise. A healthy diet partnered with physical activity can help reduce many health risks.
Instead of reaching for the sugary snacks to get you through the day, the meals and snacks by BistroMD are scientifically balanced to promote healthy weight loss, and are designed to help you fight food cravings that can overwhelm you during office hours.
