TUCSON, Ariz., Nov. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Photometrics, a manufacturer of high-performance scientific cameras for life sciences, announces that its Prime Scientific CMOS (sCMOS) Camera was named a winner of the 2016 R&D 100 Awards. As one of the 100 most technologically significant new products in Analytical/Test: Imaging Systems/Devices category, Prime is a 4.2 Megapixel sCMOS camera and the first in the industry to actively reduce the negative impact of Poisson noise in low-light images. The awards honor the 100 most innovative technologies and services which were recognized at the 54th Annual R&D 100 Awards on November 3, 2016 in Washington, D.C. The award-winning camera will be shown at the upcoming Neuroscience conference on November 12-16 at the San Diego Convention Center in booth 2712.
"The touchstone of our 30-year corporate history has been preserving excellent photometric performance, while pioneering the next generation of scientific imaging innovation," said Rachit Mohindra, Photometrics product manager. "We're honored to receive an award that recognizes some of the most influential products of the past century and we look forward to continuing to provide our customers with products that advance research."
Prime is the first sCMOS camera to go beyond imaging with its sophisticated built-in mathematical intelligence to quantitatively restore signals that are buried in photon noise. Its FPGA-based Embedded Signal Processing engine enables powerful signal restoration, significantly increasing low-light image clarity. The engine also includes feature detection for localization-based super-resolution microscopy to address data glut, a common problem when imaging at high frame rates.
The R&D 100 Awards Winners were selected by an independent panel of more than 50 judges and represent industry's leading R&D companies and national laboratories. Often referred to as the "Oscars of Invention," the R&D 100 Award recipients were recognized for exemplary accomplishments from across multiple categories.
