Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center Delivers Its First HyperArc Treatments
PALO ALTO, Calif., Dec. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian (NYSE: VAR) announced the Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center in Phoenix, AZ recently completed its first HyperArc™ High Definition Radiotherapy (HDRT) treatments for two recent post-operative cancer patients at its facility. A new type of radiosurgery treatment solution, HyperArc is designed to automate and simplify sophisticated treatments such as stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and make them available to more cancer patients around the world.
"Post-surgical stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an important indication for intracranial radiosurgery, whose goal is to increase long term survival and quality of life by ablating any remaining microscopic disease at the margins of the surgical bed," said John Kresl, MD, PhD and medical director of Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center. "The fast HyperArc treatment times of approximately 15 minutes in a single treatment timeslot are especially important for patients who have recently undergone complex neurosurgical procedures such as a craniotomy and have one or multiple brain metastases. They can be treated in a tumor-focused manner and potentially avoid whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) side effects. An entire HyperArc treatment can be completed in 1-5 fractions vs 10-15 fractions for WBRT. We are proud to be the first private practice clinic globally to be offering HyperArc treatments."
"Brain radiosurgery is a growing and critical part of radiation oncology practices," said Chris Toth, president of Varian Oncology Solutions. "The efficiency and automation of HyperArc is providing the opportunity to broaden patient access to these treatments."
HyperArc capitalizes on the unique capabilities of Varian's TrueBeam® and EDGE® treatment systems. HyperArc treatments allow clinicians the ability to deliver more compact radiation doses that closely conform to the size, shape, and location of tumors while sparing more surrounding healthy tissue. These advanced treatments can be delivered in a conventional treatment time slot. The treatment planning for HyperArc is supported by Varian's Eclipse™ treatment planning software and ARIA® oncology information system.
