ANDOVER, Mass., Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) today announced Nidia Quillinan, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow at The Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute at the University of Colorado, Denver, as the recipient of the sixth annual American Heart Association (AHA)-Philips Resuscitation Fellowship Award.

The Fellowship Award provides a $100,000 grant, funded by Philips over two years, and is presented annually to a researcher in the early stages of his or her career to pursue basic and clinical research related to cardiac resuscitation. The AHA selected Dr. Quillinan based on the merits of her research proposal. Philips chose to support the award due to its applicability to the field of resuscitation.
This year's grant will allow Dr. Quillinan to pursue research on global transient ischemia caused by a heart attack. Dr. Quillinan will examine how the condition affects Purkinje cells, which are the brain cells responsible for motor coordination and learning, and synaptic plasticity, or the way the synapses between cells change. The correlation between resuscitation and Purkinje cells is a recent discovery and the opportunities and consequences of this relationship remain unknown.
"Philips has a legacy of cardiac resuscitation innovations and accomplishments that spans more than 50 years," said Derek Smith, senior vice president and general manager, Therapeutic Care, Philips Healthcare. "The AHA fellowship award allows the research community to share in our dedication to saving lives by advancing knowledge of cardiac resuscitation. We are confident Dr. Quillinan's research will uncover new evidence that will benefit the medical and patient community."
The Fellowship Award was presented to Dr. Quillinan on November 3 at the Resuscitation Science Symposium (ReSS) meeting in Los Angeles. This annual event is held in conjunction with the AHA's Scientific Sessions.
