Philippine National Agency Selects Microsemi's Precise Time Scale System for the Country's Astronomical Observation and Time Service Unit
PAGASA Uses the Industry's Most Precise and Stable Timekeeping Device to Provide Time Service, Flood and Typhoon Warnings, Meteorological and Other Critical Information
ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Sept. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq: MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, today announced the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), a government agency for weather forecasting, flood control, astronomical observations and time service, has selected Microsemi's Precise Time Scale System (PTSS) for its Astronomical Observation and Time Service Unit (AOTSU). The PAGASA is a Philippine national institution dedicated to providing time service; flood and typhoon warnings; public weather forecasts and advisories; and meteorological, astronomical, climatological, and other specialized information and services primarily for the protection of life and property.
Microsemi's PTSS, which tells time down to the nanosecond, is currently the most precise and stable timekeeping device available on the market, which makes the PTSS ideal to establish real time synchronization sources for communications networks and navigation systems, establish a metrology and calibration laboratory, or to serve as an authoritative time server. These industry-leading attributes allow Microsemi to provide countries like the Philippines a unique turn-key product capable of providing their nations' official source of time, in addition to other services.
The PAGASA's newest timing equipment will serve as the authoritative time server for the Philippines in disseminating the Philippine Standard Time (PhST) via a Network Time Protocol (NTP) server system.
"The Philippines is now able to advance its role within the scientific community and better serve the specific needs of our country's population and satisfy the requirements of the government by using the industry's finest timing device, known as the Precision Time Scale System, from Microsemi," said Mario Raymundo, chief of the Astronomical Observation and Time Service Unit of the PAGASA. "Microsemi's PTSS has allowed PAGASA to fulfill its commitment to the people and to the country as a whole, as PAGASA is mandated to be the official timekeeper and disseminator of PhST."
The device is comprised of multiple 5071A atomic clocks, which are aggregated to determine and deliver an optimal estimate of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the basis for time synchronization throughout the world. Microsemi's atomic clocks comprise approximately 75 percent of UTC by weight, demonstrating its dominant position in the industry. Microsemi has built similar timescale systems for other countries such as India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to provide them with the capability to generate UTC, which is used for a variety of applications.
"We are pleased to provide the Philippines a fully integrated, world-class timing solution comparable to the best national laboratories, with commercial hardware and software support included to ensure success," said Sri Purisai, business unit manager for the synchronization systems business at Microsemi. "Our unique set of design features enables the state-of-the-art functionality, performance and reliability needed to establish a national timing reference or a global or regional navigation satellite system. We look forward to further expanding our customer base to allow other countries around the world to elevate their important time service capabilities."
Microsemi's PTSS is ideal for national laboratories requiring the most demanding timing accuracy, as well as applications where nanosecond precision timing is critical. In addition to metrology and scientific applications, the clock can be used in the communications, security and industrial markets.
