Philadelphia Senior Worker Earns Governor's Achievement Award
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Department of Aging Secretary John Michael Hall today presented Kathleen Thomas of Philadelphia with the Governor's Achievement Award at the PA Partners Conference.
The department selected Thomas as its Outstanding Senior Community Service Employment Program, or SCSEP, Participant.
"For the fifth year, the Department of Aging has selected a citizen who inspires us all with their determination and 'can-do' spirit," said Hall. "Once again the senior employment program has shown that older workers can achieve success by overcoming challenges."
Thomas had held a factory job in the Poconos for 14 years before downsizing forced her to return to her native Philadelphia. She possessed neither computer skills nor a high school diploma. A posting at the state CareerLink center announced jobs and training for older individuals through the Mayor's Commission on Aging and the Senior Community Service Employment Program.
Thomas received much-needed training as well as experience in other departments of the Mayor's Office. She now works part-time helping people enroll in the job training program.
SCSEP provides job training and placement for unemployed, low-income individuals 55 years of age and older. The program typically places participants in 20-hour a week community service positions at minimum wage with private, non-profit or public agencies. The goal is to train and assist seniors to transition to employment in the private sector or other government work.
