PharmMD's Brad Tice to Receive Distinguished Achievement Award
NASHVILLE, Tenn., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Brad Tice, Pharm.D., Chief Clinical Officer of PharmMD, will receive the 2010 APhA-APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in Clinical/Pharmacotherapeutic Practice during the Second General Session at APhA 2010, the annual meeting of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) to be held in Washington, D.C. on March 12-15, 2010.
The award recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within the clinical/pharmacotherapeutic practice.
Pharmaceutical care, now called Medication Therapy Management (MTM), refers to the process of preventing drug errors, overuse and abuse by ensuring that individual patients receive the most appropriate medications possible. Dr. Tice was a member of the team that wrote the accepted clinical definition of MTM approved by 11 organizations, including the APhA. He also participated on the advisory panel that developed the MTM model jointly issued by APhA and National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS).
As evidence of the increasing value and importance of MTM, in 2006, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began requiring each sponsor of its Part D drug benefits to incorporate an MTM program into their plan's benefit structure. CMS leadership has referred to MTM as the "cornerstone" of the Part D Medicare benefit.
Dr. Tice currently serves as Chief Clinical Officer for PharmMD, an MTM provider that works with employers, government plans and other payers to prevent harmful drug interactions and provide better drug therapy outcomes at a lower cost. Dr. Tice has led the development of the documentation and analytics platform that PharmMD pharmacists use to deliver services, including the development of the CPL, Clinical Programming Language, to enable pharmacists to improve care at the population level and measure the results of their services.
"Dr. Tice has a passion for patient care and improving the quality of medication therapies. This award is evidence of his leadership as a pharmacist," said Bo Bartholomew, founder and CEO of PharmMD.
As a member of the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management, Dr. Tice has held numerous leadership positions, including Member-At-Large of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Clinical/Pharmacotherapeutic section. In 2008, Dr. Tice was named a fellow of the American Pharmacists Association and for several years he sat on the Advisory Board of the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association. Tice served as Speaker of the House, Vice-Speaker and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Iowa Pharmacists Association and has also been actively involved in the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA), currently serving as the Co-Chair of its Quality Metrics Workgroup and the Technical Expert Panel advising CMS on Medication Measures.
Dr. Tice began his pharmacy career focusing on the delivery of patient care services for Osco Drug, first as a pharmacist in Kansas City, Kan., and later as a pharmacy manager for Osco Drug in Davenport, Iowa. He later became an assistant and associate professor at the Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Director of the Osco Drug/Drake University Community Care Laboratory. Dr. Tice earned his Bachelors of Science and Doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Kansas.
Dr. Tice was awarded the Iowa Pharmacy Association Young Pharmacist of the Year in
2001 and the 2005 Alfred B. Prescott/GlaxoSmithKline Leadership Award.
