PFBC Statement Regarding The Hankins Pond Dam
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) was notified of a court order to temporarily delay construction activity at the Hankins Pond Dam in Mount Pleasant Township, Wayne County. As a result, work scheduled to begin at the site on Monday will be halted, pending the result of a hearing scheduled for later this month. We await a full review of the legal filing regarding the dam and will fully cooperate with the court order.
Public safety is a top priority of the Commission. While we acknowledge the local interest in the Hankins Pond Dam, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has identified the structure as a high hazard, unsafe dam, which poses a significant threat to downstream properties should a failure occur. The approved remediation plan calls for the removal of a portion of the structure, which would effectively mitigate the risk to the local community.
